FRINGE REVIEW: Costco Heartbreak gets at vulnerabilities of one’s past

Costco Heartbreak

Stage 19, The Lumos Dental Stage, 9562 82 Ave.

3 out of 5 stars

Costco Heartbreak is not as emotionally wrought as the name implies – it bills itself as “A storytelling show about childhood crushes, online dates and searching for connection in a grocery store,” but this one-man show is entirely centred around the performer’s life as he recounts a handful of crushes, a couple relationships, and brief periods of heartbreak.

On the one hand, this storytelling hour doesn’t feel like a performance as much as it’s a mechanism to give the orator a captive audience. We’ve all been through heartbreak, and sometimes hearing someone else’ version can sound a bit like listening to them tell you about the crazy dream they had. Costco isn’t even the setting for the majority of the tale.

On the other hand, the timbre and cadence of his voice are calm, inviting, and easy to listen to. He bares himself to the crowd, shamelessly, divulging moments of vulnerability from his past that are easy to relate to.

That said, if you are stretched thin on time or money, I wouldn’t consider Costco Heartbreak a “must-see” Fringe performance.
